Bargaining Update!
We just completed Bargaining Meeting #8
Today we clarified some of the concerns about the District’s published form for Remote Learning Academy positions, specifically the district’s expectation that some RLA teachers (who are able to do so) may conduct in-person tutorials, and that applicants attest to their proficiency on remote learning tools and have a “warm online voice”. We were concerned that these last two items would be used to screen out applicants. The District confirmed that these will not be used as screening tools. Fortunately, the District also agreed that preference sheets and assignments to the RLA will be shared with the Association for review. We also confirmed that HVAC assessments will be completed and the results published prior to requesting a return to building.
As a result of the ongoing efforts of the Association, we are happy to announce that the District has agreed to continue to allow educators to complete PD virtually through next Thursday, 9/10 as we await the HVAC assessment report and corrective action plan necessary to reassure members that the buildings are safe to work in. We return to the bargaining table on Tuesday at 2 pm.
Next steps:
- We will submit our next latest counter proposal to the Committee tomorrow and will continue to work toward a final agreement on working conditions and work procedures next week.
- The Action Team will make an announcement later today with regard to our next membership meeting and what you can do to support us going forward.
We recognize that sometimes this process can seem like a slow slog, but we believe that our bargaining platform is a platform for the public good that can enhance the District’s policies to better protect staff and students during this pandemic.
Thanks to members who are conveying their concerns to us about reopening. This communication has been helpful to understanding all the different needs and concerns of our members. Please keep in mind that while you may feel comfortable with the reopening information so far we have many members who remain very concerned about the conditions they are being asked to work under. We can’t make it perfect for everyone, but as a Union we must continue to work together to help as many members as possible and stand in solidarity with one another throughout the process.
Please stand by each other, continue to attend meetings, stay up-to-date on our progress, and continue to communicate concerns as they arise. All questions can be sent to haved@verizon.net, and Secretary Deb Russell will forward them to the appropriate person.
In Solidarity,
Nancy Koorapaty and Christine Hickey
